Sai Baba is among the most popular saints of modern India. He cut across religions, embracing both Muslim and Hindu practices teaching “Allah Malik” ("GOD is the Owner of us all"). Even his name reflects both religions. Sai is Persian for “saint”, while Baby means “father” in Hindi. Sai was considered a saint by both religions. Sai Baba led a very simple life and asceitic life as a Sadhu (holy man). He would sleep on the floors of temples and mosques. He also encouraged all who came to him to show tolerance of other faiths. Many miracles were attributed to Sai Baba and as his fame spread, numerous people sought him out for his blessings. Sai remained in Shirdi all his life and was buried in the “Buty Wada” also known as “Samadhi Mandir”. His teachings are carried on today by various groups, the most prominent one being the Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust. It is believed that Sathya Sai Baba is the reincarnation of Shirdi Sai Baba. |

Summary
Sai Baba of Shirdi or Shirdi Sai Baba was believed to have been born on September 27, 1838. Little record of his early life remains. What is known is that he first arrived in Shirdi Village, Maharashtra, when he was sixteen (1854). For a few months he lived at the temple. He then left and didn’t return until 1858 when he next took up residence in the local mosque. Over time, people started to address him as “Sai” (Saint / Father). There are limited written records of Sai’s teachings. What does exist, is short and simple. He desperately tried to unite both the Hindus and Muslims communities. Even though he was unable to unite the two religions, he is still regarded as a miracle worker. He died on October 15, 1918, and was buried in a temple.
