Sree Narayana Guru Swami (1856 - 1928)
Nârâyana Guru was known as a great saint, sage, and social reformer. He loved every human on Earth, regardless of their religious beliefs. He played a major part in the revolt against the socially unjust case system of India. His actions helped transform the social face of Kerala. He believed that education was the best way to uplift society, so he established many schools and temples in his lifetime. Sri Narayana Guru had many followers and disciples, one of whom, Dr. P. Palpu, founded the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Organization in 1903. This organization was built on the principals of Advaita philosophy and was instrumental in the fight against the caste system in India.

Summary
Nârâyana Guru was born at Chempazhanthi, in 1856. At the age of twenty-one, he was sent to Karunagapalli, where he mastered advanced Sanskrit, in addition to studying philosophy, poetry, and drama. At the age of twenty-five, Nanu returned to his village and started teaching at a local school and giving sermons to the village people. Although married, his spiritual inclination was to eventually set him on the road as a wandering sadhu (holyman). During these years, he was to meet many learned people, such as Kunjan Pilla, who became his friend. Later, Kunjan introduced Narayana to a master of yogic practices, Thycaud Ayyavu, who was to have an enduring impact on his life. It is not clear when he moved to his hermitage deep inside the hilly forest area in Maruthwamala, but after thirty years, of austere, ascetic, meditation, and yogic practices, Nârâyana Guru is believed to have attained a state of Enlightenment. In 1913, he founded an Ashram (hermitage) at Alwaye, and it was dedicated to a great principal, Om Sahodaryam Sarvatra, which means, “All men are equal in the eyes of God.”
