Sri Aurobindo (1872 - 1950)
Sri Aurobindo was a writer, philosopher, scholar, revolutionary, visionary, yogi, and teacher. After a short political career, he got involved in the movement to seek independence for India. Once India gained its independence, Sri Aurobindo then turned his attention to the development of a new spiritual path which he called “Integral Yoga”. “Integral Yoga” aimed to develop a higher spiritual consciousness on Earth. He devoted the last forty years of his life realizing his vision of “divinity on Earth”. He founded the Sri Aurobindo Ashram (hermitage) which he dedicated to transforming and perfecting life. He taught that all life was yoga and that through conscious aspiration one could open to a new consciousness, which he called the Supramental. In 1920 he was joined by the Mother, Mirra Alfassa, and they collaborated together on many works until his death.

Summary
He was born on August 15, 1872, in Calcutta. At the age of seven, he was sent to England education, first at St Paul’s and then later Cambridge. He returned to India at the age of twenty-one in 1893. For the next thirteen years, he worked in Baroda, as a state administrator. In 1906, he became a leader of the nationalist party and wrote editorials in the daily ‘Bande Mataram’. Due to his political activities he was detained by the British Government in 1908. During this time he underwent a deep spiritual experience. In 1910, he withdrew from the political field and moved to Pondicherry. After moving to Pondicherry, he dedicated himself to his spiritual mission, until his death in 1950
