Summary
John Tarrant was born in 1949 in Australia. He was raised in rural Tasmania, Australia. His parents wanted him to have a bare minimum upbringing. No electricity, no indoor plumbing, just focussing on surviving off the land. His earliest influences included the Catholic Church and particularly the Latin Mass, Australian Aboriginal culture, and a passion for English literature, especially poetry.[1] He attended the Australian National University on scholarship. The school is considered to be the best in Australia. He earned a dual degree in Human Sciences and English Literature. He had many jobs after college, until he was introduced into the Tibetan tradition of Buddhism. Tarrant soon found Zen Buddhism and found that more towards his liking. He moved to Hawaii and studied under Robert Baker Aitken, eventually becoming his Dharma successor. He decided to go back to school, so he moved to California and got his PhD in Psychology from the Saybrook Institute. He then established the famed California Diamond Sangha, which became the Pacific Zen Institute. He has become a successful author and poet and also teaches at Duke University Medical School in North Carolina.
