Chozen and Hogen Bays Roshi
Jan Chozen Bays and Hogen Bays can essentially be called the first couple of Oregon Zen. The two Roshis met at the Zen Center of Los Angeles and got married. They eventually moved to Oregon and started to work for the Zen Community of Oregon in the mid-80's. In 2002, they opened up their own Zen monastery called the Great Vow Zen Monastery of Clatskanie, Oregon. They still reside in Portland, Oregon, where they remain the co-abbots of their monastery. Jan Chozen Bays is also a pediatrician. From 1990 until present she has continued to expand her knowledge under the mentorship of Shodo Harada, a Rinzai Zen teacher. [1][2] Hogan Bays holds a Naturopathic Doctor and a Master’s Degree (MS) in Psychology. He also works for the Oregon Department of Corrections for many years.

Summary
Jan Chozen was born in Maryland in 1945. She began studying Zen in 1973. She received Jukai (lay precepts) in 1975 and Tokudo, Priest's Ordination, in 1979 from Taizan Maezumi, Roshi. From 1978 to 1983 she lived at the Zen Center of Los Angeles, studying with Maezumi Roshi and directing the Zen Center's non-profit Medical Clinic. She finished formal koan study in 1983 and she was given Dharma transmission, authorization to teach, the same year. Following the death of Maezumi Roshi in 1995, she has continued her training with Shodo Harada Roshi, a Rinzai Zen teacher, abbot of Sogen-ji monastery in Japan. [3] Her husband, Hogen Bays, began practicing in 1968. Hogen is a doctor and holds a Master's Degree in Psychology. He was a part of the staff at the Zen Center of Rochester (in New York) until 1975. In 1980, he also lived and studied under Taizan Maezumi at the Zen Center of Los Angeles. Where he meet Jan Chozen. In 1990, Bays took his Tokudo (Priest's Ordination). In 2000, he received his Dharma Transmission.
