Summary
Alfred Jitsudo Ancheta was born on Thanksgiving day in 1943, on what happened to be the day of the biggest snowstorm of the decade. Although he lived in New Mexico, he did his schooling in California. He did a year of schooling at Long Beach Junior College before he decided to enter the military in 1962. He served as a medic and sergeant in the army, stationed in Germany, for five years. When the war was over, he returned to Long Beach JC and then transferred to Fullerton. While there, he started to learn Zen under Koun Taizan Dai Osho at the Zen Center of Los Angeles. He graduated from Fullerton in 1972. That is when he decided to move to British Columbia, Canada. He would travel from BC to LA to study at the Zen Center. In 1982, he became ordained and moved back to California to be the resident head monk at the Zen Mountain Center. Ancheta was able to study in Japan for a month and the following year was made a full-time teacher. He also founded Inward Bound, a program that introduced meditation to students from the inner cities. In 1994, Maezumi Roshi gave him his Dharma transmission. He decided to open his own zendo in New Mexico. He called it the Hidden Mountain Zen Center. In 2002, he retired from the center. Over the last several years, Jitsudo has also developed a practice in the arts as a woodblock printmaker, and a designer/carver of signature "chops" or seals. [1] In 2006, he resumed teaching again in Alberquerque.
