Summary
Her Eminence Jetsun Kushok Chimey Luding was born in 1938 into the Kohn family, whose lineage dates back to around 750, at which time the family were viceroys of the Tsang province of Tibet. After receiving teachings from such masters as Sachen Kunga Nyingpo, the Kohn family started to spread their teachings throughout their territories from 1073 onwards. This was to become the Sakya School of Tibetan Buddhism. Jetsun Kushok was the first child of the late 40th Saka Trinzin. Three other children were born after her, but only she and His Holiness Ngawang Kunga survived. Her mother died when she was ten and her father died when she was thirteen. She was raised by his aunt Trinley Paljor Zangmo, who oversaw the running of the town of Sakya and the education of the two young children. At the age of five, she began her dharma studies. At the age of seven, she was ordained as a novice. At the age of ten, she had her first retreat, meditating on the form of Bhutadamara, and in a month completed one million recitations of the short mantra, Hum Vajra Phat and one hundred thousand recitations of the long mantra. At the age of eleven, her father, Kunga Richen the 40th Saka Trinzin, among the nomads of northern Tibet gave her transmissions and teachings. In 1951, at the age of thirteen, she made her first divinations in order to interpret the omens regarding an abbot who had been imprisoned. She recommended that the members of the monastery perform the four mandala puja of Green Tara and recite the Twenty-One praises to Tara one hundred thousand times. Which they did the day after the abbot was set free. In 1951, the Dalai Lama formally recognized her brother as the Sakya Trinzin. From that time on, brother and sister were constantly in each other’s company receiving the same teachings until they fled to India in 1959. Once in India, Jetsun Kushok found it difficult to live as a nun without the support of a monastic life. After consulting the Dalai Lama and her brother, she decided to give back her robes. She started to study English at the Christian mission, there she met Luding Sey Kushok, who was the brother of the Ngor Luding Khen. As their lineage is a blood succession, it was conceived that she should marry Sey Kushok. Although she initially refused, she agreed to marry Richen Luding in 1964. Their third child was a boy and was destined to become the Luding Shabdrung in the Luding succession. At the age of four, the young Luding Khenzhon Rinpoche was left in the care of his uncles, when Jetsun Kushok and her husband and three other children moved to Canada in 1971. At first, she stopped teaching, but over some time she started to teach and has been teaching every since.
