Venerable Geshe Lama Sherab Gyaltsen Amipa Rinpoche is senior teacher of the Sakya School of Tibetan Buddhist. After many years of study in Tibet and then later India. Lama Sherab at the request of the Tibetan Government in exile, was asked to relocate to Europe to teach the Dharma, which he did in 1967. Since that time, he has taught Tibetan Buddhism across Europe, helping to establish a permanent home for Tibetan Buddhism on the continent. In 1977, he helped establish the European Institute of Tibetan Buddhism at Kuttolsheim close to Strasbourg Today, he is responsible not only for giving regular teachings, but also for the administration of many centers all across Europe. He has also written a number of books on Sakya history and Buddhist practices and a number of Tibetan / English text books. Much of his writing are now available in a number of different languages. |

Summary
Venerable Geshe Lama Sherab Gyaltsen Amipa Rinpoche was born in 1931 in the town of Sakya in Tibet. Coming from a family with a tradition of strong religious practice, he entered the Sakya Monastery at the age of seven. During his early years, his principle teachers were Venerable Khenpo Sangye Rinchen and His Holiness the 40th Sakya Trizin Ngawang Thutob Wangchug. He excelled at his studies. At the age of eighteen, he passed the Kachu examination which opened the door for him to reach the level of Geshe. At the age of 20, Lama Sherab was ordained as a monk. After obtaining the geshe degree, he in turn began to teach in the Sakya monastery. He continued with his teaching, receiving more and more instruction at the years past. In 1960, Lama Sherab escaped to India from Tibet. Once there as a representative of the Sakya tradition he went to Dhalousie to study western subjects and languages. In 1967, with the agreement of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government in exile, Lama Sherab was asked to go to the newly founded Tibetan Institute in Rikon near Zurich in Switzerland. Over time, he gained notoriety and influence drawing people from all over Europe. In 1977, Lama Sherab helped open a new centre, Sakya Tsechen Ling, in Strasbourg. A year later, a house was opened in the village of Kuttolsheim close to Strasbourg. This has now become the site of the European Institute of Tibetan Buddhism where the resident Lama (Venerable Lama Dagpa Woeser) Venerable Lama Sherab also gives monthly weekend sessions of teachings and initiations.
