Kyabje Takling Tsetrul Rinpoche was born in 1926 in the central area of Tibet. He received his first ordination at the age of five at Taklung Tse monastery, which is affiliated with Thubten Dorje Drak, the seat of the Jang Ter (Northern Treasure) Nyingma dharma tradition.[1] Not only was he fully ordained, but he also received the title and enthronement of a tulku. The ninth Dodrak Rigdzin Chowang Nyamnyi Dorje had a meditation vision and identified Kyabje Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche as the next rebirth. At the age of eight, he was given his dharma seat at the Thubten Dorje Drak. When he turned fourteen, he began studying with Pawo Rinpoche, a student of Khenpo Thubten Gyaltsen. At the age of twenty, he received complete transmissions and empowerments from the Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche and Rinchen Terdzo. The retreat master at Mindroling monastery and Lalung Sungtrul Rinpoche gave him transmissions and empowerments for the treasures of Padma Lingpa. Golok Chewo Rinpoche transmitted the Seven Treasures and other teachings of Longchen Ranjam to him. While at Dorje Drak, he received all empowerments and transmissions for the higher and lower Changter treasure teachings, in addition, he also received the Kama (oral) teachings, and the nature of the mind.[2] He became a khenpo at Dodrak monastery, but was asked to return to Taklung monastery. On the 2500th anniversary of Buddha's parinirvana, he went on a trip to India. In 1959, with the Chinese invasion of Tibet, he decided to move to India and arrived at Sikkim, where he would live for two years. He went to Rumtek monastery and received the empowerments and transmissions of the Treasury of Oral Instructions and Kagyu Mantra Treasury from His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa. In Kalimpong, he received the entire empowerments and transmissions of the Great Terma Treasury, the Nyingma Kama, and some of the dharma treasures of Dudjom Lingpa, from Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche. In Bhutan, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche gave him transmissions for the collected teachings of Mipham Rinpoche, empowerments and transmissions for the Heart Essence of Longchenpa, and other Dzogchen practices and tantras. He moved to Simla, India to work in a Tibetan refugee settlement. He decided to make a new Dorje Drak, since the previous one was destroyed. It was important to open a new Dorje Drak in order to preserve the Changter lineage. He continues to travel around offering empowerments and transmissions. He has given these to some of the highest Buddhist monks, such as Namkhai Nyingpo Rinpoche in Bhutan, Kyabje Penor Rinpoche in Mysore, and Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche at Shechen monastery in Nepal. [3]
