Dr. Acharya Shiv muni Ji (1942 - )
H.H. Acharya Shree Dr. Shivmuni Ji M.S. M.A., Ph.D., D. Lt. Litt is a scholar, a true karma yogi, peace activist and a leading exponent of Jainism. He has dedicated his life to the observance of penance, meditation and contemplation of the inner self. He is associated with many activities working for the upliftment of humanity. After many years of mediation study, practice and teaching, Acharya Shivmuni Ji has managed to uplift the lives of thousands of people. In response to demands from all over India for the Acharya to teach mediation, Shivmuni Ji put together a three day meditation training courses based on his own experiences. The courses have become so successful that Shivmuni Ji established the International Mediation Center in New Delhi, where highly experience instructors now offer his three day mediation camps to all people regardless of sex, cast or religion. Summary
Acharya Shivmuni Ji was born on September 18th, 1942 in the town of Malout in the Malwa region of the Punjab. His family was affluent and well respected his father was Shri Chiranji Lal and his mother was SMT Vidya Devi both were staunch followers of Jain culture. [1] In 1947, with the partition of India and the largest and most rapid population transfer in history, with 17.9 million people leaving their homes. Of these, only 14.5 million arrived, suggesting that 3.4 million went “missing”. [2] As a child the young Shivmuni Ji witnessed the effect of religious hatred, with the deaths and destruction of masses of innocents. It is said it was then that the young boy opened his heart to embrace non violence to solve the problems of humanity and to save the earth. He decided to devote his life to the promotion of peace through propagating the principles and teaching of Tirthankars and Jainism, to uplifting humanity and protecting the environment. [1] After completing school Shivmuni Ji entered University where he excelled in all his classes. It is said that his education in University could not satiate his hunger for truth. [1][3] After completing his M.A. in English Literature and Philosophy, Shivmuni Ji travelled far and wide throughout America, Canada, England and Europe in order to understand different cultures and the various morals and values of other societies. It was then that he started to look more closely at the teachings of Jain philosophy and theology. The teachings stirred his inner self and it was then that he decided to renounce the worldly life and take to the life of an ascetic. On May 1972, he entered sraman sangh in Malout in the Punjab. He became a disciple of Shri Gian Muni Ji a well known Jain scholar. In the following years Shivmuni Ji studied Jain philosophy and theology. He completed his doctorate at the Punjabi University, Patiala. After a few years at the direction of his guru, Shivmuni Ji travelled all over India preaching Jain tenets. His personal piety and the simplicity of his message meet with openness from all who heard him. In 1986, he was given the prestigious designation as Yuvacharya of Shraman Sangh in recognition of his high achievement. In 1999, with the untimely demise of Acharya Shree Devender Muniji, Shivmuni Ji became Acharya of Shraman Sangh.
