Summary
Mehmet Nāzım Adil or Muhammad Nazim al-Qubrusi al-Haqqani was born on April 23, 1922, in Larnaca, Cyprus. He comes from the lineage of 11th century Sufi Abdul Qadir Jilani and 13th century Anatolian mystic Jalaluddin Rami. Both sets of his grandparents were sheikhs in the Qadiri and Mevlevi orders. Like many other mystics, he showed a strong spiritual side as a youth. He received his normal schooling in the day and studied Islam at the local maktab (elementary school) at night. He completed secondary school in 1940 and moved to Istanbul at the age of 18. He studied chemical engineering at Istanbul University. While doing his college studies, he also continued to learn about Islam from Shaykh Cemalettin Elassonli. He received his degree, but his desire to study Islam was more important to him. Nazim then met Shaykh Suleyman Erzurumi, would would become his spiritual guide. He studied at the Sultan Ahmet Mosque where he learned the basic methods of the Naqshbandi Order as well as Qadiri and Mevlevi. After a brother's death, Nazim felt compelled to go to Damascus to study under Shaykh Abdullah al-Fa'izi ad-Daghestani. He reached Syria in 1944, but was unable to make it into Damascus until the following year. Nazim met Shaykh Abdullah and took his hand in bay'ah, or initiation. Shaykh Abdullah saw great promise in Nazim and ordered him to return to Cyprus to deliver spiritual guidance. Nazim was made an official Shaykh, allowing him to be a teacher in the Naqshbandi Order. Nazim ran into many problems in Cyprus. The acting government was not tolerant of Sufi traditions and 114 cases were lodged against Nazim. After a regime change, a more tolerant approach was brought to the area and Nazim was able to practice in peace. In 1952, Nazim moved to Damascus and married a daughter of Shaykh Abdullah and started a family. He still traveled to Cyprus every year and stayed for three months. In 1973, Nazim started traveling to London. This became an annual trip and he would spend the month of Ramadan in London every year. In 1991, Nazim made his first trip to America. He presided over the marriage of his grandson. In 1993, Nazim opened a center in Michigan for Sufi retreats and activities with his son-in-law and khalifa (spiritual successor), Shaykh Kabbani. He continued to make trips to London as well as various other places to attend various ceremonies and conferences. In 2000, Nazim retired from traveling to London due to his old age. He also traveled to America for the last time. The following year, he made a trip with Kabbani through Uzbekistan, Japan, Singapore, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka on the Naqshbandi-Haqqani Eastern World Tour of the Muslim World. He currently lives in Northern Cyprus and rarely travels.
