His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche (1901 - 1981)
His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche has been described as “One of the foremost Tibetan Buddhist masters of our time.” [1] When the Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was young he acted as his philosophical assistant. Later, he became the Dalai Lama’s personal tutor, a position he held for over forty years. He was also the teacher of many other Gelug Lamas including: Geshe Rabten, Lama Yeshe, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, Kyabje Zong Rinpoche, and Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. He was seen as "a vast reservoir from which all Gelugpa practitioners of the present day received 'waters' of blessings and instructions" as described by Geshe Kelsang[2]. Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche also held the temporal position of Ganden Tripa, the elected spiritual leader of the Gelugpa School of Tibetan Buddhism. As a direct disciple of Pabongka Rinpoche, he was responsible for editing Pabongka Rinpoche’s ‘Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand’, one of the most studied Lam-Rim texts in the Gelugpa lineage. He is also credited with writing "Gyallu," the Tibetan National Anthem adopted by the community in exile around 1950. His reincarnation, His Holiness Kyabie Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche, was born in 1982. His recognization being officially confirmed by the Dalai Lama. At the age of six, he officially entered the Ganden Monastic University and the Shartse College. At the age of eight, he received his novice ordination. From that point on he has been submerged in his studies of the Dharma, receiving teachings from HH the Dalai Lama and his private tutor, the Ven. Lati Rinpoche. Last heard he was engaged in intense studies of Buddhist philosophy at the Center for Buddhist Studies Rabten Choeling in Switzerland.
