Swami Satyananda Saraswati is a well-known yoga master and guru. He is he founder of the ‘Bihar School of Yoga’ as it is know in India and of the ‘Satyananda Yoga Tradition’ as it is known outside India. At the age of nineteen, he started his study of yoga under the mentorship of Swami Sivananda. Later, he traveled widely studying many other traditions of spiritual practice. Swami Satyananda’ teachings are a blend of Kundalini Yoga, Kriya Yoga, Mantra Yoga, Laya Yoga etc. Before his retirement in 1988, he traveled all around the world teaching others. His emphasize is on Tantra and Integral Yoga. He has authored over 80 books and established a number of charitable institutions, such as, Sivananda math and the Yoga Research foundation. He presently lives as a Sannyasin (monk) performing higher vedic and spiritual sadhanas. |

Summary
Swami Satyananda Saraswati was born on July 26th,1923, in Almora, U.P., India. At the age of nineteen, in 1943, he took innitiation from Swami Sivananda at Rishikeshi . For the next twelve years, he lived at the Sivananda Ashram in Rishikesh. During this time, he expanded his knowledge whilst also helping with the writing of articles and the translation of various ancient texts. After leaving the ashram he embarked on a period of travel. For the next eight years, he travelled around India, Ceylon, Afghanistan, Nepal, and Burma, expanding his knowledge of spiritual practices. Eventually, he setttled in Munger, Bihar. In 1963, he founded the International Yoga Fellowship and a year later the Bihar School of Yoga. Over the next twenty-five years, he taught yoga iternationally and wrote a number of books. In 1988, he retired from yoga teaching, handing the work of the ashram to his disciple Swami Niranjanananda.
