Hazrat Babajan (1790 - 1931)
Hazrat Babajan was described by Meher Baba as one of the five Perfect Masters of her era. A Perfect Master being one who can make like themselves any number of souls. According to Meher Baba, Hazrat gave him God-realization through a kiss on the forehead when he was nineteen years old. After this experience, he remained in a state of bliss for nine months during which time he didn’t eat or sleep. Somewhere around 1903, Babajan’s saintly status was confirmed when she survived being buried alive by guards working for the governing religious authority in the Punjab, who viewed her teaching as blasphemy. During the last thirty years of her life around Poona, saw Babajan at last settled at a spot near Char Bavadi, Malcom Tank, underneath the neem tree. This spot became a popular place for Indians to visit. Babajan was known for her unconditional love and charity. She would heal all who came to her and give without personal concern to all who needed it.

Summary
Hazrat Babajan was born somewhere between 1790 and 1800 and was given the name Gulrukh. She was born into a royal Muslim family in Baluchistan now part of Pakistan. Gulrukh was from an Afghani noble family; in keeping with her social status she received an extensive education. She studied the Quran, Arabic, Persian, Pushtoo, and Urdu. It is said she was unlike other girls her age. From an early age, she was spiritually inclined and she would often be found in solitude, praying and reciting the Koran. At the age of eighteen, she fled an arranged marriage to find God. She escaped to Rawalpindi in India and for many years she led an ascetic life. Eventually, she came in contact with a Hindu saint who initiated her onto her spiritual path. After this initiation, she underwent an intense period of austere practices, solitude, prayer, and fasting. This period was to last nearly seventeen months on a nearby mountain outside Rawalpindi. At the age of 37, she received God-realization from a Muslim teacher called Qutub Maula Shah in the Punjab, India. For many years Hazrat traveled all over India. On a return visit to the Punjab a few years later, Hazrat, in a moment of ecstasy, uttered some words in connection with her divine state that was treated as blasphemy. The orthodox church had her buried alive. Much to everyone’s amazement, she survived the ordeal. In 1903, after this ordeal, Hazrat left the North forever and moved south to Poona. As word spread of her survival, her saintly status was confirmed and there after, she became known as Hazrat Babjan. The rest of her life was spent in Poona. Hazrat died on September 18, 1931, at an estimated age of 125 years. In Pune today, there remains a shrine to this Perfect Master.
